What we do

Four connected areas of work, shaped by community priorities

Clean energy, food, leadership and wellbeing are not separate problems in a household. Our work brings them together so that women can make lasting change in their homes and communities.

Images on this site are illustrative artwork while LAWODA prepares approved, consented photography of its work.

Our approach

Women as agents of change — not recipients of aid

Lasting change in Laikipia comes from the people who live here. We start with what women and communities already know, what they want to change, and what they are ready to lead.

  • Community-led. Priorities come from community conversations, not from outside assumptions.
  • Practical. We favour affordable, locally workable solutions that households can keep using.
  • Connected. Energy, food, leadership and wellbeing are tackled together, as they are lived.
  • Accountable. We share what we learn honestly, including what has not worked.

More about how we work

How change happens

From conversation to lasting practice

We will publish figures only when they are verified. Until then, this is the path we follow with communities — and the kind of change we look for.

  1. Listen

Community conversations with women’s groups to understand needs, ideas and what is already working.

  2. Organise

Women come together to plan, share skills and decide on practical next steps.

  3. Act

Hands-on activities — from cleaner cooking to dryland farming — that households can sustain.

  4. Learn & share

We review progress with participants and share verified results with partners.

Work with a grassroots organisation that knows Laikipia

We welcome conversations with development partners, public institutions, businesses and researchers who share our commitment to women-led, community-driven change. We will be clear about what we can deliver, and we expect the same in return.
